Dreaming Big

Now that we are staying in our home for the long haul it has me dreaming of ways to make it more dream home like. High on the wish list is to have a screened in porch. I would have it function as an additional room and furnish it like wise. These have me dreaming big...

I love the style of the one below although I would like is a bit larger.

Of course once I start pricing things out I may realize it may not be realistic. It seems my ideas may be grander than our wallets at times. If that is the case then a pergola would be quite nice too.

Either way we decide to go it must be able to support a porch swing like the one designed by the most talented Rachel of the Nest Egg. Is it not AMAZING? The pup is quite cute too.

Isnt it such a bummer to try and implement our dreams into reality, especialy when our wallets dictate our reality! sigh...im currently dreaming/scheming of a kitchen overhaul. There is just so much goodness out there, i can't even pin down what i want it to look like, much less even begin the process. Good luck with your dreams!

Love that porch swing and I think you need a screened porch for sure.

Hi Paula,

I've been reading your blog for a while now, but this is my first comment (lame, I know!). Anyway, I hope you are able to build a screened in porch! The house I grew up in had one and we lived out there in the summer. It's so nice to be outside and not have to worry about bugs and sunburn. I'm betting that your family would get a ton of use out of it. :)

I have always loved that first picture from Cottage Living (rip) and Rachel Halvorson's swing is on my husband's "to build someday" list. Absolutely love it.

Your recent postings about staying where you are remind me a little of our situation. We recently did some checking on the value of our home, with the hopes that we could put it on the market at a price that would yield a small net gain and move forward with our "too good to be true" 5 year plan. It turns out that the plan is, in fact, too good to be true. So our 5 year plan is now, realistically, a 10 year plan due to waiting out the stinky housing market.

Love the screened in porches!! Have been contemplating one myself for about a year.... not sure how practical it would be here in So.Texas, as it's hot as blazes in the Summer. However, I do think that it would be so practical regarding the bug (mosquites) problem. Maybe with numerous fans, comfy furniture and that fabulous swing, it would certainly be do-able! Thanks for sharing the pictures, keep us updated on the 'dreams'!

I love screened in porches (especially with a great swing or hammock). There's something so relaxing about hanging out on a late summer evening with friends and family. Ahh, keep dreming big!

A screened porch in the south does become another room added to the house. Great idea!

i highly recommend a screen porch! the only way i was able to get one when we were designing the house 6 yrs ago was to steal 7 grand from my cabinetry/countertop budget. so glad i did. i can replace mediocre countertops in laundry and pantry down the line, but build a porch? we would never have gotten around to it. the space is 10X14 with a 10' ceiling and right next to the kitchen. we use it and love it!

smiles.

Oh that would be so lovely! We don't really have screened in porches down here, but everyone did where I grew up. Sleeping porches, we called them. LOVE! Go for it, life is short.

I love screened porches! I am finally having one built at my house. I've always thought they were lovely. It's just so Southern to me. I'm really hoping you get one!

I've always wanted a screened in porch. A few of these are just what my dream looks like too. Our CT house does have a front porch and that has always been something I wanted as well. It just feels so welcoming. I love that swing and well the little puppy too.

Paula! So funny. I love seeing little Finley on your blog! I'm so flattered. And yes, you need one of both!! You take care of the screened porch- I'll hook you up with a swing. :) xo Rachel

While I love our home, the biggest thing I miss about our old house is the screened-in porch. We spent three of the four seasons out there. It allowed us to open our kitchen and family room to have an extended place for entertaining. One day, we hope to add a porch onto our current home. If you're going to be there for the long haul, I highly recommend a porch. You'll find it to be one of the greatest investments. :)
